FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Warning Do Not Pay Subbies Hourly RatesToday's Date -- 18 June 2003 Lots of members have found themselves in trouble recently – with the tax office, WorkCover, and the Industrial Commission – because they have been paying their subbies on an hourly rates basis. Any subbies being paid hourly rates will almost certainly be deemed to be an EMPLOYEE if there is ever a question raised about their entitlements to superannuation, workers compensation insurance, overtime penalties, rostered days off, pay for public holidays, annual leave, sick pay, long service leave etc etc and all the other entitlements that normally follow when a worker is engaged as a daily hire employee. ALWAYS pay your sub-contractors on a job-by-job, lump sum basis. ALWAYS have a contract for every job you engage a subbies to work on (use the Association’s standard sub-contract agreement forms).
